Mahachai is a hub of the Thai seafood industry, which is reliant on a steady stream of cheap labor from neighboring countries, like Burma. The ILO estimates that as many as a third of the 500,000 people working in the Thai seafood industry could be victims of human trafficking. We work with the Migrant Workers Rights Network (MWRN), a grassroots organization run by democratically-elected, migrant-worker leaders, which is organizing these workers so they are less isolated, and thus less vulnerable.
The pressure on the Thai government is mounting to allow these workers greater legal protection, and with your support, we will be able to keep increasing that pressure.
After intense campaigning from ILRF and allies, Thailand was downgraded to the lowest level in this year’s Trafficking in Persons Report from the U.S. State Department. We are also ramping up industry pressure, and engaging Western retailers to push changes down their supply chains that address the root cause of forced labor in this industry: the precarious situation of migrant workers.
We have the potential to see great change in this industry in the coming year. Now we need your help to promote better business practices and empower migrant workers who harvest and process our seafood. Please donate today to make your stand against forced labor this Giving Tuesday!
