Sri Lankan migrant workers to be repatriated from Korea

The Foreign Employment Bureau says that all preparations have been made for the repatriation of Sri Lankans employed in South Korea in the event of a war situation cropping up in the Korean peninsula.

The Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Ministry says that Minister Dilan Perera had given relevant instructions to the Sri Lankan embassy in South Korea.

The Foreign Employment Bureau said further that discussions necessary for securing the assistance of the International Immigration Organization have also been held for the repatriation of the Sri Lankan workers in South Korea, in case of an emergency situation cropping up there.

Deputy Secretary General of the UNP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena has stated that government should make prior preparations to repatriate Sri Lankan migrant workers in North and South Korea in case of an outbreak of war in the Korean peninsula.

Meanwhile all Sri Lankans in South Korea have been informed to visit the Sri Lankan embassy in South Korea and register themselves.

Currently between 20,000 and 25,000 Sri Lankan employees serve in South Korea.

Most of them are employed in areas close to the South Korean border such as Ansaan, Ulsaan, Inchong, Fuuson and Ujambu.
