Introduction: The Challenges of Globalization for Workers: Transnational and Transborder Issues

Date

2004

Auteurs

Adalberto Aguirre

Résumé

Serves as an introduction to the literature on economic globalization, its impact on immigration and immigrating workers, and the relationship between neoliberalism and income inequality. Aguirre and Reese contend that economic globalization is creating an international race to the bottom for wages and working conditions. Multinational corporations search around the globe for the lowest wages, and developing nations support this trend through the creation of export-processing zones. Economic globalization and neoliberalism empower employers, who are able to relocate capital, and create a race to the bottom, as developing nations compete to attract foreign direct investment. Resisting the race to the bottom requires revitalizing transboundary labor movement, strengthening unions, incorporating immigrant labor into unions, and challenging the neoliberal hegemony. 63 References.
