United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1518 is one of two UFCW Local Unions in British Columbia, and one of the largest unions in the province.
The first UFCW Local was established in our province in 1899, although it was certainly not called the UFCW in those days. In fact, our union has evolved dramatically in its one-hundred-plus years of growth.
Today, UFCW Local 1518 works for 26,000 people employed in a broad range of industries. The bulk of our members work in the retail food industry, but we have large numbers of members employed in food processing, commercial retail and drug stores, the health care industry, poultry processing, and other industries. Our job is to represent our members in their work place. We negotiate and police over 150 Collective Agreements that provide our members with fair wages, benefits, working conditions, job security and a voice in their work place
We have 19 Union Representatives, office support staff, and 7 Directors who bring specialized skills to our servicing program. Our staff is located in five offices strategically located around the province. But the work we do on behalf of our members goes beyond negotiating and policing Collective Agreements. We provide representation for our members injured on the job to ensure that they get Workers Compensation, Weekly Indemnity, and Long Term Disability benefits when they are entitled to these benefits.
We have a full time occupational health and safety specialist on staff as well as a specialist who deals with pensions and health care benefits for our members. Our Organizing and Education Department brings new members into our union and provides thousands of hours of education each year for our members that provides them with the skills they need to effectively represent their co-workers on the job. Moreover, the UFCW Centre in Surrey provides educational programs for members and their families, including numerous computer courses, and online courses you can take from the comfort of your home.
The Communications Department provides a regular flow of relevant information to our members on issues that affect them in their workplace, as well as outside issues that may impact upon them and their families.
UFCW Local 1518 has a long tradition of being active in the communities where our members work and live. We participate in many community projects and programs that will benefit our members and their families directly or indirectly. The Leukemia Research Fund, in both Canada and the United States, is the official charity of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union across North America. The Union has raised millions of dollars over the past several years to fund research into improved treatments and ultimately, a cure for this terrible disease. Local 1518 does its share to raise funds for Leukemia Research in British Columbia by holding various fund raising events.
UFCW Local 1518 has a proud tradition and history of representing working people throughout British Columbia. We are dedicated to continuing that tradition and making our communities and province a better place for our members and for all working people.- Statut
