When Liza Draman came to Canada in 2007 she paid $3,500 to a recruiter to get a job as a live-in caregiver.
According to human rights lawyer Fay Faraday, $3,500 is on the low end. It can be as high as $15,000 -- and that’s to get a minimum wage job. For some, that’s as much as three years of wages.
“That’s money they don’t have on hand,” says Faraday to Kevin Newman Live. “In order to get that money they have to go to an informal lender.”
