Employment and immigration statistics indicate that Alberta will soon face a shortage of 110,000 workers in the next decade.
Employment Minister Hector Goudreau explained that unless government and industry start finding new ways to attract workers, the statistical predictions of a 110,000 worker shortage in the province will become a reality."Because of the aging workforce, even if we do all the right things - inform, attract, develop, retain - we still will not have enough workers," said Goudreau. The province is currently between 30,000 to 40,000 workers short in all fields of employment, Goudreau said.
These comments were made prior to announcing a new provincial immigration initiative that would allow Albertans to fast-track family members with a post-secondary education and work experience to come here.
Under the new Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program. the sponsored family member must be between 21 and 45 years old, but does not need to have a job lined up before they apply.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada will make the final decision on permanent resident applications and nominees must still pass security and health checks.
"Adding this family stream to the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program will help us meet our workforce needs while creating more diverse and welcoming communities for all our families," Goudreau said.
