WINNIPEG - A group of foreign workers dubbed "The Three Amigos" are scheduled to fly out of Canada on Wednesday after being ordered deported earlier this year.
Antonio Laroya, Arnisito Gaviola and Ermie Zotomayor were arrested nearly a year ago for working at a gas station in Thompson, Man., without the proper work permits.
The trio who were working in Canada to support their families in the Philippines said they paid thousands to a recruiter and ended up in Alberta in low-paying jobs.
After they were laid off they ended up in Thompson, where they say their employer promised he would file the necessary paperwork for them.
Their bid to stay in Canada was thrown out by an Immigration and Refugee Board adjudicator in March, who ruled they were responsible for making sure the proper paperwork had been done.
The employer, Adnan Chaudhury, has been charged with 18 offences relating to hiring workers without work permits and misrepresentation.
