Abstract

The Economic and Social Council, in its agreed conclusions 2002/1 of 26 July
2002, invited its functional commissions to provide input to the overall theme of the
Council’s coordination and high-level segments as they relate to their area of work.
The present note has been prepared to assist the Commission on the Status of Women
should it consider providing input to the high-level segment of the 2006 substantive
session of the Economic and Social Council on the theme “Creating an environment
at the national and international levels conducive to generating full and productive
employment and decent work for all, and its impact on sustainable development”.
The note provides examples of recommendations for action on full employment and
decent work for women in the Beijing Platform for Action, the outcome of the
twenty-third special session of the General Assembly, agreed conclusions of the
Commission on the Status of Women and other relevant outcomes of sessions of the
General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council, in particular highlighting
the linkages between an enabling environment, gender equality, employment and
sustainable development.
